The day before we left The Maldives, we were able to tour around Male's various landmarks which are great sources of information about the country's past. The two major sites we visited were the area where the President's office and residence were located and the cemetery where their national hero was buried.
Mohammed Thakurufaanu, the nation's main hero, led a revolt which helped free the country from the Portuguese who invaded them in the 16th century. He then became the islands' ruler for 12 years. Photo on the lower right features his delicately carved tomb constructed using corals. Notice that I wasn't smiling on the picture.
Near the cemetery was the President's official residence. We weren't able to enter that time because the gate was closed.
